Bangalore traffic - never a happy sight. It sometimes becomes almost impossible to negotiate one's way through the city, and more so during peak hours (but now slowly that's gonna go away as bangalore inches towards being a 24 hour city) . Even the experienced driver sometimes gives up, exasperated by the unruly and erratic traffic. God alone knows when the metro's gonna actually start functioning. Even the odd promises of the govt of having 2 more road over roads and widening of existing roads doesn't seem to lift the spirits of the daily commuters.
But the worst part of it all, i feel, is the autos. Get stuck behind an auto, and there u have it.. your worst nightmare. And its like adding fuel to the fire if the auto is passenger-less. God damn i dunno exactly at what speed they go at.. it's not high enough to be called a reasonable speed (given the road is free)..(believe me, if u have a train or flight to catch n u're banking on the last minute, or lets say a cupla minutes later than the last minute considering we're in India, you're just so screwed!).. and at the same time, it's not low enough that you can comfortably overtake them n proceed. It's like, you HAVE to follow him, come what may, for a furlong atleast, until the road widens or the opposite track is free or something. Fellows don't allow you to overtake them at all. It's like they rule the road , or atleast think they do. (Because actually, BMTC buses rule the road). And like i said, if the auto in front of you is passenger-less, i'm pretty sure you'l be driven to frustration.. and you'l just feel like going n banging into him (if you're driving a car or truck). And hell, get into a fight with one auto guy, and you'l be real lucky if u get away with just a fracture or 2. It's like some unsaid connection, an innate bond , something of a kind of brethren relationship between the auto dudes. "Each one defend one" seems to be the general rule around, and sometimes even policemen shy away from the situation where a gang of auto drivers is involved.
And you never know when you're gonna get caught behind an auto. They just chip in from nowhere (and sometimes, really nowhere!!!) and you haaave to slow down and give him his "right of way". Else like i said, one touch to his beloved auto, and you better just scoot at minimum 90 kph.
No matter how carefully and prudently u drive, they will drive you mad. you decide to be decent n slow n take the left track of your lane, and you'l regret even taking up driving as the "khaali" autos'l just kill u nuts. Take the right track, and hey, there's our new auto trying to take a U-turn
at a totally non existent turning.
It's a real test of life, driving in bangalore. Widening of roads would help to some extent, but getting the autos to follow some sort of a "lane" system will make walking into a lion's den unarmed seem like child's play. I dont think there is anything one can do about this. People themselves have to adjust to the current scenario n move on in life. Maybe things will change once the metro's in action, but i think it's a long, long way ahead.
